A night out on 5th Ave in Sunset Park

Here is a thing people in this neighborhood have accepted for too long: that a real night out — dinner, drinks, a show — means getting on the R and going somewhere else.

It doesn't. Not anymore, and honestly not for a while now.

The neighborhood has quietly gotten very good

Sunset Park has two commercial spines and they don't look anything alike. Eighth Avenue is one of the largest Chinatowns in New York, dense with regional Chinese food that people cross the city for. Fifth Avenue is Latin American — Mexican, Ecuadorian, Dominican, Puerto Rican — block after block of it, plus the bars and cafes that have opened alongside over the last decade.

Then there's the park itself, which has the best free view of the Manhattan skyline in the borough, and Industry City a few blocks west. That's a lot of neighborhood for somewhere that still gets described as up-and-coming.

What's been missing

Nightlife that gives you a reason to stay out. Sunset Park has never had a comedy club. Live music is thin. For a long time the honest answer to "what do you want to do after dinner?" was "get a drink somewhere" or "go home."

That's the gap we opened into. A comedy show is the rare thing that turns two separate outings into one night: you eat, you see something, you end up back at the bar talking about it. It's the connective tissue.

How to build the night around a show

Our Saturday show starts at 7:00 PM specifically so it doesn't eat your evening. Thursday and Friday go up at 8:00. Either way the shape is the same:

• Eat first, on 5th or 8th. You've got dozens of options within a ten-minute walk, at prices that would be a typo in most of Manhattan.
• Get to L'Wren 30 minutes before showtime. Doors open then, seating is first-come, and you want a drink in your hand before the lights drop.
• Do the show. 75 to 90 minutes, four to seven comics.
• Stay at the bar. L'Wren keeps going after we're done, and it's a genuinely good cocktail bar — that's not a courtesy sentence about our landlord, it's why we wanted the room.

On a Saturday that whole sequence has you out of the show by 8:30 with the night still ahead of you.

Getting here, and getting home

The R stops at 36th St and 45th St, both a short walk along 5th Ave. The D and N also hit 36th St. The B63 bus runs straight down 5th and stops within a block of the door.

And if you drive: street parking around here is genuinely findable, which is not a sentence anyone gets to write about the Upper East Side.

The point

We didn't put a comedy club in Sunset Park because it was cheap. We put one here because the neighborhood already had everything else a good night needs and was missing the middle of it.
